In early May 2024, while I was still with the Medical College of Wisconsin, I was contacted by the Business Research & Intelligence (BRI) Network regarding a speaking opportunity for their relatively new “Value-Based Healthcare Congress.” At the time, they were looking for executives with value-based care (VBC) experience, particularly from academic medical centers. I happily accepted, and on September 16th and 17th, I joined Revelar Analytics' Chief Medical Officer & Director of Value-Based Care at Chesapeake Urology Associates, Dr. Adam Kern.
Together, we presented "Leveraging Price Transparency Data for Provider Organizations Pursuing Value-Based Payment Arrangements" to an audience of about fifty people at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa. It was an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss price transparency in the context of fair market value, compensation design, and contract negotiation. Executives from renowned institutions such as Stanford, UW-Madison, and Vanderbilt University were also present, making the event a valuable platform for collaboration.
For being a newer conference, the Value-Based Healthcare Congress proved to be an engaging event. While small, its size allowed for more meaningful interactions with other speakers and attendees. One notable connection we made was with Sergio Wagner, the new Chief Strategy Officer for Salient Healthcare.
It’s also worth noting that BRI Network hosted three smaller conferences alongside the Value-Based Healthcare Congress: the Medicare Advantage Congress and the Star Ratings & Quality Improvement Summit.
Topics of Interest
Several presentations stood out, including:
“Remote Patient Monitoring in Value-Based Care Systems” by Carla Moore Beckerle of Esse Health.
“Trends to Watch as APMs Evolve” by Halima Ahmadi-Montecalvo, PhD, MPH, of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University.
“Workforce Transformation” by Sean Nelson, MHA, of MUSC Health.
“Engaging Providers & Optimizing Performers in Value-Based Care” by Dr. Seth M. Dubry, of Equality Health.
The Medicare Advantage Congress also offered unique perspectives, including “Innovations in Servicing Special Needs Members: Why Medicare Advantage and Managed Medicaid Plans are Turning to Telehealth to Revolutionize the Way They Provide Access to Specialty Health Services like Audiology” by Dru Jeffery, of Audicus. (And it’s nice to know Dr. Kern and I didn’t have the longest presentation title!)
Reflections
Overall, the Value-Based Healthcare Congress was a wonderful event. Dr. Kern and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience and gained valuable insights from our time in Phoenix. While BRI Network has yet to announce next year’s conference location, we’d be eager to attend again—especially as the event continues to grow in scope. There’s always something new to discuss, particularly in the realms of price transparency and value-based care.
